After a fairly in depth analysis of my charging system the fault was found to be a short on a small live cable from the alternator, it had nothing to do with my using the hoover at the same time as the washing machine, purely coincidental.
Pleasing to have found it and equally pleasing to know it was not due to my stupidity 😀
