When I bought Quinquireme there was one thing I knew I would alter at some stage, namely change the bath to a shower, the bath is only 1200mm long and I am longer, I tried it twice, once sitting in it, knees under my chin, and once kneeling in it, neither was a success so I have since used it just as a shower but my head hits the ceiling.
Having been on board for a couple of years other things have raised my hackles, the wardrobe is too small and in the coldest position in the boat right in the front corner, the furthest point from the stove, also there is a small cupboard in the corridor, because the corridor is narrow it is very awkward to access this cupboard.
So having spent a lot of time trying to work out a configuration that would solve these issues I have decided on a re-jig of bathroom and bedroom which also entails some alterations to the galley.
Firstly I needed to form two new cupboards in the galley and re-position the fridge, altering the wiring, this allows me to move the washing machine out of the bathroom into the galley giving me more wall surface in the bathroom, the washing machine is currently in the galley, tucked under the worktop but accessed from the bathroom.
So I began, removing the two draws from the dresser type unit and forming one of the cupboards, I can't form the other yet as I won't get the washing machine through the new gap after. I am salvaging the oak faced board from bedroom/bathroom to try to keep the galley looking the same.
It's not easy, what is on a narrowboat, angles everywhere, curved walls, lack of tools and space and a distinct lack of enthusiasm all added to the fact that I am living in it, but I have achieved the first target, one new cupboard formed.
Tomorrow I will move the fridge and alter the wiring to feed it.
The fridge is going here, I am forming cupboards in the wasted angled spaces |
First cupboard formed, drawers enclosure altered to fit fridge in.. |
